Oregon Horse Tripping Exposed

With permission by Laura Allen
Oregon Horse Tripping Exposed

Horse tripping event organizers try to block Animal Law Coalition's photos of animal cruelty

Animal Law Coalition has released a video revealing horse tripping events still occur in Oregon, one of the few western states where the cruel practice remains legal. In the last legislative session a bill to ban horse tripping or horse roping in Oregon did not pass, in part, because legislators were told it no longer occurred in the state.

Horse tripping involves riders on horseback chasing a horse and causing the animal to flee. When the horse has reached full speed, a rider lassoes one of the horse's legs, then stops and pulls back on the rope, causing the horse to trip forward and smash full-force onto the ground. In other so-called horse roping practices, a horse is lassoed about the neck and the rope is then pulled down and taut, driving the animal's head into the ground.

Russ Mead, Animal Law Coalition's General Counsel, saw the horse tripping and horse roping first hand at the Harney County Rodeo in Burns, Oregon on July 7, 2012. The organizers don't even try to hide it. The grisly event was held at the county fairgrounds. Mead said, "You can hear the horses gasping, struggling, all the way outside of the arena. This is not a sport. This is animal cruelty, plain and simple."

Organizers of the rodeo tried to block Mead from photographing the horse tripping and roping. They tried to "block my view, and at one point, I was surrounded by ten people on horse back and taunted and threatened. One person tried to grab my camera." Even so, Mead was able to obtain photographs showing this cruel practice continues in Oregon.

The horse tripping exposed in Burns follows the release in May of video by SHARK that proved the cruel practice occurred also at the Jordan Valley Big Loop Rodeo in Southeastern Oregon.

Mead summarized, "One person at the rodeo told me tripping horses is a 'tradition', a 'part of the culture'. 'Tradition' and 'culture' are always used to justify practices we now know are wrong. Times change, and it's time for horse tripping and horse roping to go the way of animal fighting. It's time Oregon joined most other western states and banned this animal cruelty."

Oregon lawmakers are expected to take up the issue again in the next session. Contact Animal Law Coalition to learn how you can help ban horse tripping and roping.

Important reminder: Calls needed, full House votes tomorrow

IMPORTANT! Your calls are needed NOW! Please CALL the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121; ask to be connected to your state Representative's office. Tell them not to fund horse slaughter. Calls must be made today!

The full House of Representatives will vote on the AG Appropriations bill tomorrow, Tuesday, June 26. A new amendment could be offered to remove the Committee-approved language that was just added back in last week prohibiting the USDA from spending tax dollars to inspect horse slaughter facilities. Committe Votes to impose a Ban on Spending Taxpayer Dollars

For Immediate Release
Wild for Life Foundation
June 19, 2012
Los Angeles, CA

The Moran Amendment has passed! The Amendment imposes a ban on the spending of taxpayer dollars for USDA inspection of horses that was lifted in 2011, and will now be part of the House version of the Agriculture budget. The bill is set for a full House vote in coming days.

The addition of the Moran Amendment to the farm bill is a major upset for the proponents of horse slaughter that were aggressively pushing to open new slaughterhouses in the U.S. this year. The protective language was lifted from an annual appropriations bill last year when it reached the Senate and a special conference committee of just four individuals, and Senators Blunt and Kohl and Congressman Kingston voted to drop the language. Had the entire Senate voted on the amendment last year, it would have no doubt passed.

As we continue our diligent pursuit of justice and to bring the truth to the mainstream, we will keep close watch on this bill and the related activities.

Today's important victory marks a turn in the tides but we must stay vigilant in our efforts to insure that America’s horses are adequately protected from insidious slaughter. Until a federal law is passed to ban the slaughter of America’s horses, they will continue to be shipped across federal borders for horsemeat which is sold as a delicacy overseas.

We at Wild for Life Foundation believe that America’s horses deserve to be protected and the public deserves to know the truth.  There is still much work to do. We must continue to stand strong, stay united and keep the pressure on. If you haven’t yet done so, please take a moment to sign the Pledge to help Stop Equine Cruelty.

Change happens when we stand together to fight for America’s equines.

Thanks to all your hard work and calls on this important issue!!

CALL TO ACTION: Support the Moran Amendment to stop USDA funding for the slaughter of horses on US

AAHS
Wild for Life Foundation
June 12, 2012

Support the Moran Amendment to stop USDA funding for the slaughter of horses on US soil by contacting your State’s member of the US Full House Committee on Appropriations

Rep. James Moran (D-8-VA) will submit an Amendment within the next few DAYS to the Full House Committee on Appropriations prohibiting funding of USDA horse slaughter inspections necessary to export horse meat. If this amendment becomes law, no facility for the slaughter of equines for human consumption can operate in the U.S.
Last fall, 2011, the Congress and the President ended the de-funding, making it legal to slaughter horses for human consumption in the U.S. once again. Until then horse slaughter for human consumption had been illegal in the U.S. since 2007.
Support the Moran Amendment by calling / faxing your State's member of the US Full House Committee on Appropriations with the following recommended message:

Experts Calling for Horse Slaughter Ban Unite at 2012 American Equine Summit

CHATHAM, N.Y., March 27, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Horse experts from across the country will converge on Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary in Chatham, NY for the 2012 American Equine Summit on Saturday, March 31st and Sunday, April 1st with one objective -- to reverse the damage done by Congress in Nov. 2011 by mobilizing an effective grassroots movement to end the slaughter of America's horses in the US and abroad.

The attendees will be comprised of press, lawmakers and those involved with equine welfare and the horse industry. Interested parties are encouraged to "like" Equine Advocates on Facebook, follow us on Twitter @EquineAdvocates, and for live updates during the Summit, use the following hash tag: #AES2012.

"It's just plain wrong when lobbies for the Agriculture and Quarter Horse industries can influence members of Congress to supersede the will of the more than 80% of Americans who want a federal ban on horse slaughter," said Susan Wagner, President of Equine Advocates. "The 'eighty percenters' deserve to be heard. Instead, lawmakers controlled by special interests prevailed and gave horse slaughter proponents exactly what they wanted. It's not only egregious, it's downright un-American."

The Summit will be opened by legendary concert promoter and horse lover, Ron Delsener. Two new speakers have been added - Dr. Caroline Betts, who will discuss the discrepancies in the 2011 GAO report on the closings of horse slaughterhouses in the US, and former US Congressman John Sweeney (R-NY), who was the primary sponsor for the successful passage of H.R. 503, the House version of the 2006 American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Other speakers include Cathleen Doyle, former head of the California Equine Council and Save the Horses, John Holland, President Equine Welfare Alliance, Dr. Kraig J. Kulikowski, D.V.M., Katia Louise, director of the film, "Saving America's Horses," Victoria McCullough who helped pass Florida's "Equine Protection Act of 2010," Jo Anne Normile of Saving Baby Equine Charity and founder of CANTER and Paula Bacon, former Mayor of Kaufman, Texas who led the fight to close Dallas Crown, a horse slaughterhouse operating in Kaufman.

Said Bacon, "I believe a horse slaughter plant is among the very least desirable things a community would want. It ranks with a lead smelter plant and strip clubs, the dead opposite of economic development. A horse slaughter plant creates big, expensive environmental problems for taxpayers and stigmatizes the community as 'that place where they slaughter horses' -- and good development goes elsewhere."

States currently trying to revive and reopen horse slaughter plants include Oregon, Missouri and Tennessee.
Founded in 1996, Equine Advocates is a non-profit equine protection organization and Horse Sanctuary based in Chatham, NY. Its mission is to rescue, protect and prevent the abuse of equines, especially through banning the slaughter of American horses, through education, investigation, rescue operations and public education.

Prominent Equine Attorney Bing Bush, Jr. Named Good Will Ambassador to SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES

Prominent Equine Attorney Bing Bush, Jr. Named Good Will Ambassador to SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES
News Release | March 6, 2012

Bing Bush, Jr., one of the Thoroughbred industry’s most prominent and well respected equine attorneys, has been named a Good Will Ambassador to WFLF’s SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES, the nation’s voice for the protection of equines from cruelty. In accepting this prestigious position, Bing Bush, Jr. will be seeking to raise awareness as a voice from within the equine community.

"I have been involved with horses and also in the thoroughbred racing industry nearly all my life. I have likewise been involved with several organizations that provide homes for thoroughbreds after the end of their racing careers. Yet the film, SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES was a sobering wake up call to the need for all horsemen and horsewomen to do more to ensure that our beloved horses are protected. I urge the leaders in the Thoroughbred industry to set an example for the rest of the industry to actively get behind SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES, and support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act." — Bing Bush Jr., equine attorney

“We are honored to welcome and recognize Bing Bush, Jr. for his passionate and invaluable support for SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES. As a Good Will Ambassador Bing’s voice will undoubtedly speak to the heart of the Thoroughbred industry and give strength to a more united effort in the protection of America's horses from gruesome slaughter,” said Katia Louise, President of WFLF’s Saving America’s Horses Initiative.

Bing Bush, Jr. was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, and from a very young age was an active participant in 4-H, Pony Club and Hunter and Jumper Shows. He subsequently broke yearlings at local Lexington horse farms; both galloped and trained racehorses; and has worked in numerous organizations in the equine industry. With offices both in Del Mar, California and also in Lexington, Kentucky, Bush, Jr. represents players in the equine world from consortiums of owners to jockeys, trainers, investors and others, both nationally and internationally.

SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES is a landmark documentary film that examines the arguments made by both the proponents and opponents of horse slaughter; bringing forth the un-whitewashed truth. The Saving America’s Horses Initiative is a consortium of equine professionals dedicated through education and leadership, to educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership and the protection of equines from cruelty. WFLF Study Reveals Disturbing Number of U.S. Thoroughbreds Slaughtered Each Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wild for Life Foundation
Los Angeles, CA
March 1, 2012

WFLF Study Reveals Disturbing Number of U.S. Thoroughbreds Slaughtered Each Year

Wild for Life Foundation releases a Case Study conducted on the number of Thoroughbreds that die at slaughter annually. The findings represent a detailed portrait of the U.S. Thoroughbreds slaughtered in the years 2002 through 2010, as compared to annual Thoroughbred foal crop.
The case study is based on data published by the U.S. government and the Jockey Club. According to the study, an amount equal to 70% of the annual Thoroughbred foal crop, on average, die at slaughter each year.

“The polls have shown that the vast majority of those in racing want an end to the transport of their horses to any slaughterhouse,” said Jo Anne Normile, founder of Saving Baby Equine Charity and CANTER, the first organization to take Thoroughbreds right from the track to safe havens. “But for every Secretariat, for every Seabiscuit, there are tens of thousands of racehorses whose experiences on the back lots of the country’s tracks tell a different story.”

“As more race tracks scramble to implement programs to protect thoroughbreds at the end of their careers, it is important to remember that this same horrible fate is imposed on many that never have a racing career.” — Shelley Abrams, Racehorse Owner, Co Founder Americans Against Horse Slaughter.

“Without federal protection, aftercare programs cannot safeguard our horses from the harm of horse slaughter,” adds Katia Louise, President Wild for Life Foundation. “It’s evident that more must be done by the industry, including a united stance supporting a federal ban on slaughter of horses for human consumption.”

Wild for Life Foundation extends an open invitation to the leaders of the Thoroughbred industry to join the Saving America’s Horses Initiative for the protection of all horses from slaughter. Leaders in the Thoroughbred industry can help champion the way by reinstating an anti-slaughter position and supporting the legislative bills that protect all America’s horses from slaughter.

As part of the initiative, “Saving America’s Horses” is spotlighting the issue through the world's most powerful visual resource, cinema. SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES, the movie is a brilliant and hard hitting expose` that sends a life-changing and lingering message to the public about the need to protect our horses.

"SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES is a sobering wake up call to the need for all horsemen and horsewomen to do more to ensure that our beloved horses are protected. I urge the leaders in the Thoroughbred industry to set an example for the rest of the industry to actively get behind this film and support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act." — Bing Bush Jr., equine attorney

"SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES is so important to shed light on the reality of what is happening to our horses everyday in this country. My hope is that every horse lover will come away with a whole new understanding of why we have to protect these magnificent animals after seeing the film" says Nick Zito, Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse trainer.

Americans Against Horse Slaughter and Animal Law Coalition join Wild for Life Foundation in its Saving America’s Horses Initiative in calling for an auditable aftercare program for rehabilitation, retraining and adoption for horses whose racing careers have ended must be put into action in all racing jurisdictions and the industry must generate the funds to assist in the transition of horses from racing into second careers. These organizations further recommend that the leaders in the equine industry resolve to a vigorous showing of support for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act and put an end to the travesty and tragedy of horse slaughter for human consumption.
